忘れもしません

あれは、18年前の夏の日のことです。


当時、私は小学校の4年生でした。

その日、私は仙台市中心部から車で1時間ほど走った片田舎の親戚の家に家族と遊びに行ったのです。

そこは、国道から少し離れた のどかな場所で、
風情のある田園風景が広がっていました。

私は、親戚の家で昼食を食べた後、
蛙やバッタを捕まえたりして遊んでいたら　
あっという間に時間が経ち、のどが渇いてきたので
幼稚園児の従兄弟（いとこ）を一人連れて近所のコンビニへ買い物に行きました。



日が暮れかかった　その帰り道

前方から二人組の女子高校生が楽しそうにお喋りをしながら歩いてくるのに気がつきました。

しばらく歩いて　彼女たちとすれ違ったそのとき

隣にいた幼稚園児の従兄弟が、私にこう言ったのです！


「ねえ！　なんで あの右側のお姉ちゃんは、お婆さんをおんぶしてるの？」



おんぶ？


従兄弟が何のことを言っているのか　当時の私には全くわかりませんでした。


なぜなら

女子高校生は二人とも　誰も おんぶなんかしていなかったからです。



でも

いま　あの日のことを振り返ると寒気がします。

従兄弟には見えていたのです！


女子高校生の背中にしがみついた　

この世の者ではない 老婆の姿が・・・



最近になってから、私は従兄弟に このときのことを思い切って尋ねてみましたが、本人は全く覚えていませんでした。

私には、ただ彼女の無事を祈ることしかできないのです。
